As with any other profession, becoming an Orthopedic Surgeon requires hard work and dedication. However, more extensive work and schooling has to be done if anyone wishes to make a career of this field. Below is a list of practical steps to take to become an Orthopedic Surgeon:

1.Develop an Interest In This Field:

In order to enjoy what this particular profession entails, it is best to study the field and analyze why pursuing a career in this area is important.

2. Pursue Undergraduate Education:

After identifying why Orthopedic Surgeons are necessary, register with a college. This four year degree program will provide you with the requisite knowledge and foundation that is needed for you to branch out. Since an undergraduate degree is pre-medicine based, you will be taught and schooled on human biology and other subjects such as chemistry and physics.

3. MCAT Test:

MCAT is the abbreviated form for the Medical College Admission Test. Since this particular test is done in a day, there is not much prolonged work to do. The test consists of four sections which include the biology of sciences, physical sciences and others.

4. Send a Request for Enrollment:

Provided that you have been successful in your previous studies, you are now qualified to enroll or apply for medical school. If the medical school that is applied for is competitive, you may be requested for an interview.

5. Medical School:

All worked well in your favor and you have been granted entry into your medical school of choice. You will be engaged in intense studies for a period of 4 years. Enrollment in this program requires that you spend your initial 2 years in the classroom and the final 2 years in a hospital based facility. It is of interest to note that you will be subjected to two exams. One exam is taken after your second year and the other will be done the following year.

6. Apply to Join the Residency Program for Orthopedic Surgeons:

This program will give you additional training that is well needed. You will be introduced to a more expansive or wider area of your field. General surgical training will be provided to you and an added 3 to four years of orthopedic surgery. Since this program is highly competitive, it is best to put your best foot forward.

7. Your Final Classroom Journey:

After completion of the residency program, you will be given a test from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS) which is mandatory that you pass. With your success on this paper, you’re well on your way into the field of Orthopedic Surgeons.
