Alcohol Abuse Among the Youth and College Age Range of the Nation: A Concerning Issue at the Least
In recent years, alcohol use and abuse has become an ever more concerning and prevalent issue indeed. For many, this is an issue that has continued in its exacerbation ever since the turn of the century. Sadly, the statistics on it are pretty severe. These are demographics that prior to the turn of the century were not really affected by drug abuse, but now individuals in these demographics are dying in the thousands every year from drug and alcohol addiction. These individuals are dying left and right because they have not really had to deal with addiction before, and they don’t exactly know what they are doing when it comes to drug and alcohol abuse. Young adults in particular have been dying form overdoses in droves, and if something isn’t done soon to correct this issue then it will surely only get much, much worse a long time before it gets any better. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC), has labeled this issue as a legitimate epidemic, bumping the seriousness of the issue up from a crisis in the year of 2012.
The Issue at Its Worst in Naperville
Medical students may actually be more at risk for problem drinking and alcohol abuse in general, a new study says, citing burnout and school debt as two possible reasons. The study also lists generic college partying as a major factor too. Naperville is trying to control this issue by implementing a drug rehabilitation Naperville in the area for students who go to college and are seeking help to overcome their drug addiction.
From the study exactly: “Our findings clearly show there is reason for concern,” said study senior author Dr. Liselotte Dyrbye, an internist and researcher at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. “We recommend institutions pursue a multifaceted solution to address related issues with burnout, the cost of medical education and alcohol abuse,” she said in a Mayo news release about the topic on which it has been studying for so long.
As for the numbers on this particular issue, researchers found that about 1,400 medical students reported alcohol abuse or dependence. That’s about a third of medical students who responded to the study! By comparison, about 16 percent of people who aren’t in medical school have an alcohol abuse or dependence problem, the study said. Contrary to what used to be popular belief, medical students are actually much more likely to develop alcoholism or some degree of alcoholism than other students in different fields are.
