Preserving the health of our environment has become a more prominent focus in recent years. Research continues to show the many risks associated with the environment as well as what needs to be done to save it. Many have taken this movement personally and have begun to implement solutions in their own lives. There are no qualifications for one to be an environmental activist, but here are some simple ideas to get you started.
Know the Material
Research the problems and concerns that are happening now to help you better understand them. There are several different areas of environmentalism that can be focused on. Whether you prefer to work on water pollution, air pollution, climate change or wildlife conservation, there are numerous things we can do to inform ourselves. By studying the varying environmental concerns, you can become familiar with areas of risk and how we as humans are contributing to the problem. Choose an area or two that suits you best to focus your efforts.
Use Your Voice
Stand up for what you believe to be right and share it with others. It doesn’t matter how big or how small you are your voice matters. Louise Gund, a famous Broadway producer, has been very instrumental in the movement for environmental change. Her passion demonstrates that no matter what else you’re called to do in life, everyone can use their voice to promote positive action. Don’t be afraid to speak up for the environment and the impact each person can have on this global problem.
Begin at Home
Starting at home may seem like an insignificant thing, but this is fundamental in laying the groundwork for big changes. It puts credibility to your beliefs and shows others you are not afraid to practice what you preach. When others see the steps you are taking it may cause them to re-evaluate their habits and can lead to transformation. There are so many ways to implement change from inside your house that almost anyone can do it. Don’t be afraid to go after something new and alter your lifestyle for the greater good.
Reach the Community
If you want to reach the world, it’s best to start by reaching your local community. Research and discover groups that can help you spread the word about what needs to change. With their support, you will be able to do more collectively than a single force going it alone. Represent your research wherever possible, attend local meetings, and promote change for the environment through fairs and other public settings.
Apply Some Imagination
Activism is not solely yelling on street corners, holding signs, and protesting. It requires ingenuity and skill to find new ways to spread the word. Many will turn away from protests not wanting to be bothered with words and voices. Try implementing clever ways to show the change that should occur in our environment. Use examples and statistics to prove what is happening around us. Create visuals that you can post on social media that can help others realize things they could do to help the environment. Let people know how they can make a difference even if they are not avid environmentalists themselves.
Change may not happen overnight but be patient and stay the course. Remember that small steps will help you reach your destination, and you don’t have to do everything all at once.
