Winter is coming. There is no avoiding it. With it, comes dry skin, sore noses, flaky patches, and greasy breakouts. To avoid these, it’s important to change your skincare routine in preparation. This way, your skin will be in the best health possible and protected from winter damage before it’s too late. You know what they always say, prevention is better than a cure.
Drink More Water
Water is one of the best things for your body. It keeps everything working as it should by helping you to stay hydrated. This includes making your skin brighter, giving it extra elasticity, which can prevent wrinkles, keeping it soft and making sure it’s healthy, so less likely to become sore or chapped. Try to drink two liters a day and remember, this doesn’t have to be pure water; juices and even tea and coffee count.
Use an Intense Moisturizer
A lot of us let our moisturization routine slide over summer and instead focus on using sunscreen and after-sun when we need it. As winter approaches, it’s important to get back into the habit of moisturizing every day after your shower. Even if your skin is soft, it’s a good idea to get an intense moisturizer, such as one containing shea butter, to give it extra protection from the bitter wind.
Keep Your Lips Soft
Your lips can easily become dry and chapped in the cooler months. The harsh winds can damage them, but so can artificial heating once you are inside. Try something simple like Vaseline or lipstick with added moisturizer to keep them soft and supple all year round.
Keep the SPF
While you’ll probably be covered up for most of the winter, it’s important that your face, which is still exposed to harmful UV rays, remains protected. The best way to do this is by using makeup with an added SPF. Check out reviews of makeup products and read advice to find the products that are right for your skin while offering you protection from the sun.
Look After Your Hands
Hands also suffer in the winter. They can become dry and flaky and could even crack between your fingers. Your nails could also become brittle and soft. To look after your hands over the winter months, wear gloves when you are outside, use a moisturizing hand soap, make sure you dry them thoroughly and use a good quality hand cream.
Watch Your Diet
You may be tempted to eat lots of fatty comfort food when it’s cold outside. While this might make you feel good in the short term, it could have a terrible effect on your skin, including oil build up and spot breakouts. Instead, eat warming winter soups, packed with vegetables when you want something comforting. You should be able to get all the vitamins you need from your diet, but taking an extra multivitamin can’t do any harm.
There’s no reason your skin can’t stay bright, soft, and youthful all year around. You just need to take good care of it.
