Before pounding on the causes of ovarian cancer we should get into a detailed discussion on what it is like. Just like the other types of cancer that generally develops when a group of cells grow abnormally and out of control, forming a tumor. This tumor if abandoned and untreated, can spread to other parts of the body causing cancer. Such spread of a tumor to other parts of the body from the ovary is called metastatic ovarian cancer, and the process of migration of the cells is called metastasis.
As we all know in all the female primate mammals, there are two ovaries or reproductive glands which produce ova. These eggs or ova are generally maintained by the main two female hormones, estrogen and progesterone. The earliest symptoms of ovarian cancer or often vague and hence go unnoticed, can be understood by the fact that, only a mere 20% off all the kinds of ovarian cancers can be detected at their early stage. The most common and associated symptoms of ovarian cancers are discussed below:
- An abnormally greater urge to urinate or urinating quite often.
- Abnormal and irregular menstrual cycles.
- Difficulty in eating.
- A feeling of unusual fullness after a meal.
- Bloating in the abdomen causing pressure and pain.
- Indigestion and heartburn.
- Constipation.
- Back pain.
- Fatigue.
- Pain while having intercourse.
- Dermatomyositis, which is an inflammatory disease causing weakness in the muscles, inflamed muscles and severe rashes on the skin.
Although there might be a great number of reasons for the individual occurrence of each of these symptoms, and it might also be so that a person who is accounting a lot of these symptoms, is not suffering from ovarian cancer. These are actually very common symptoms and a woman might face some of these, at some point in time in her life. In case of that, the symptoms are very temporary and can be treated in simple ways. Although an early detection can be very effective in, the treatment of cancer, a person must immediately rush to the doctor if she faces some new symptoms. Symptoms that usually persist, and cannot be cured with medications over quite some time, maybe an indication of ovarian cancer. Symptoms worsen as the tumor grows and spreads.
Ovarian cancer treatment cost in India is quite low compared to the cost in other countries, and hence this is giving way to medical tourism in India. However the cost greatly depends upon at which stage of cancer it is detected, and the kind of treatment the patient would require. The stage in cancer is usually determined depending upon how intensified the condition is or how much it has spread. Usually, ovarian cancer has four main stages which have different sub-stages of their own. But cancer, when detected in the first stage, has the greatest chance of survival and recovery rate.
- Stage1:
- If the cancer is bound or localized in any one ovary, it is in stage 1A.
- If cancer has spread to both ovaries, it is in stage 1B.
- In 1C, cancer cells are found outside the ovary also.
