In today’s day and age, social media plays a key role in shaping and defining society. Both the general public and celebrities are using the likes of Facebook and Twitter on a daily basis in order to keep friends and fans updated on the latest news.
Many of the world’s top sports stars use these websites to promote brands but also to inform fans on their life away from the world of sport. For example, Cristiano Ronaldo posts pictures with his son on Instagram whilst Wayne Rooney discusses his hobbies on Twitter. Here are five of the top sports stars to follow on social media.
Rio Ferdinand
During his playing days, Rio Ferdinand was one of the most popular footballers in the game. The former Manchester United star has remained popular in his retirement and has millions of followers across all of his social media accounts. In fact, he is probably one of the best at interacting and conversing with fans, especially on the subject of United.
At the time of writing, Coral price United as 50/1 outsiders for the Premier League title – and they could certainly do with Ferdinand’s presence at the heart of their defence right now. One thing’s for sure though, Ferdinand remains a huge United supporter and he’s always giving his opinion on the Red Devils via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Usain Bolt
Usain Bolt became a household name after his phenomenal performances at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and he remains one of the most popular and liked sportsmen in the world.
Bolt’s light-hearted personality appeals to the masses and the Jamaica sprinter has attracted plenty of attention on social media too. He’s always around to raise his opinion on Manchester United, airports and his family life – including earlier this month when he became a godfather for the first time.
LeBron James
One of the greatest basketball players of all-time also makes our list for the top sports stars on social media. On Twitter, LeBron boasts over 27 million followers – which makes him one of the most followed sportsman on the planet.
The Cleveland Cavaliers star interacts with fellow celebrities on his social media accounts and also gives fans a glimpse into the life of LeBron James away from the basketball court – which only helps to keep his supporters aware and up to date on James’ latest news.
Lionel Messi
Messi doesn’t have Twitter but he’s very active on Facebook and keeps fans up to date with all of his latest news. Last month, Messi won the Ballon d’Or for the fifth time and it would take a brave man to back against the Barcelona man winning the award again – especially if Barca defend their Champions League crown.
In fact, a tipster at Coral had this to say on La Blaugrana and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see them achieve their goal. Meanwhile, Messi will look to extend his social media presence even further and who knows, he could beat nemesis Cristiano Ronaldo at that too.
Pat McAfee
The Indianapolis Colts punter/comic is an absolute must-have on social media and he’s incredibly active on both Twitter and Snapchat. Currently, he’s on a short tour of Pittsburgh as he attempts to make his way in the comedy world and his short, dry humour has fans cracking up on a daily basis.
On the field, he’s one of the best punters in the NFL and off the field, he’s easily one of the best sportsmen on social media across the globe. He’s not universally known but that does not mean that YOU shouldn’t add him!
