Not everyone cares if their bedroom has a theme, but chances are, if you’re reading this article, you are not one of those people. And – since you’re reading this – you obviously also want your theme to be as unique as you are, but don’t know where to start.
Consider this your jumping off point.
Here are 5 incredibly inspired themes you can use to enhance and celebrate your sleeping quarters.
1) Theme: Your favorite color. OK, this one may seem obvious at first, but we’re thinking beyond simply painting everything red or blue or pink. We’re talking about digging deep and choosing what it is about the color you truly love. Maybe you love yellow because it was the color of gingham on your mother’s baking apron, so – rather than slathering the room in buttercup – you’d pick up the warmth and familiarity of the color, using yellow as an accent, and furnishing your room with pieces that remind you of the house you grew up in (or actually are from that home – as they were or refurbished.)
You would use sunlight as an inspiration, the smell of sugar cookies, your mother’s smile. You’d look for these in pieces to decorate your space, creating a space where you can relax that’s removed from time, and the rest of the world.
2) Theme: Yoga. Bring the peace of your practice into your bedroom and decorate your space in a manner befitting a true yogi. Opt for a bed that’s low to the ground, and use color that reflects color therapy in yoga to replenish your energy and realign your mind, body and soul.
3) Theme. Outside, Inside. Think beyond bringing plants and flowers into your room: draw the outside in by creating a room with as much natural light as possible, and accent with colors found in nature. Opt for rustic furnishings and wicker accents. If you really want to embrace the theme, consider a hammock-style bed.
Now, being able to pull off this theme might mean adding skylights, enlarging windows and/or doors (or knocking out walls entirely: hello, glass!), but you know what they say: you gotta break a few eggs to make an omelette. (If you are going to renovate, in the spirit of embracing the outdoors, do your best to adopt eco-friendly renos.)
4) Theme: Ruins. If the prospect of sleeping where history was made floats your boat, then this is a totally inspired theme for you. Combine a simple bed frame (i.e. boxspring and mattress frame) with terracotta vases and accents, climbing indoor vines (you can cover entire sections of wall) and distressed furniture to complete the experience.
5) Theme: White Days, Black Nights. If you want a truly magical room (and one that really lights up at night) consider opting for white or off-white bedding and furnishing, with wood accents, and then hang white string lights on the ceiling, allowing them to droop only a couple inches. (Push pins or a nail gun work great for this task.) Next, take a sheet of white tulle and suspend it from the ceiling so it drapes a foot or two, also covering the lights. At night – when the lights are the only thing on – it will look like a vast, enchanting night sky. (We really love this idea for a children’s bedroom, though you can adapt it for any age.)
One of the greatest things about decorating your bedroom is that it is yours. There are no dos and don’ts. It isn’t a common area, so you don’t have to worry about what other people think. It’s yours. Do with it what you will.
